My Open-Source 3D Printed Keychron V1 Max Case
The Keychron V1 Max is an excellent entry-level mechanical keyboard; however, while I really like the PCB-plate assembly, the case was a little too simple for my taste... So I decided to spice it up and offer the design to the community for FREE under a Strongly Reciprocal CERN V2 Open Hardware License. Enjoy!

LoFree EDGE vs FLOW - A Low-Profile Showdown
Просмотров 24 тыс.2 месяца назад
LoFree is back at it, introducing another ultra-low profile mechanical keyboard (the EDGE) worth of consideration because it allows for firmware customization (key remapping, macros, backlight modification) - but how does it stack up against the wildly popular LoFree FLOW... Is there anyone who made a keychron k2v2 version of this, i really want to make a custom case for my k2v2
Nice vid mate
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it ✌🏻
I really like the aesthetic design of it, but from the look of the flex test and the sound tests, I think the gasket design could use a lot of work, or rather simply, just removing a lot of the plastic in the way and using foam gasket strips instead of the printed ones. If you look at 3:14, those gasket cups basically only allow for like 1mm maybe 2mm of flex space, and the base weight of the PCB resting in there is probably already fully compressing them letting the plate contact the case thus transferring all of those vibrations. One illustrative test you can try for your own understanding, is setting the tape-modded PCB alone on a hand towel on your desk, and seeing what the board sounds like then. That test shows basically what a perfect gasket and perfect foams, the case generating zero unwanted noise at all, could sound like. Attaining that fully is unlikely in most consumer boards, but they can still get much closer than your original design, simply through much more flexible gaskets. In a heavy aluminum case some vibration getting through is less of an issue, but in a plastic one, especially without very well through out construction that prevents rigid points of contact, will produce tons of generally unpleasant vibration/rumbling/rattling sounds, and that stiffness reverberates back up into the switches making them sound worse as well on top of the case noise. Your dyesub keycaps are suited towards a deeper/softer sound profile, so they can be fine depending on what you're going for, but the switches can be VASTLY improved for very little cost. Basically top-end astoundingly good sounding switches that are genuinely like nothing you've ever experienced before, with great stock lube so zero effort is required, are under 30 cents each, less than half of what "the best" unlubed switches from just a couple years ago cost, that now sound so cheap and low quality in comparison. HMX, Vertex V1, some of the newer Gateron releases, Bsun, etc. An HMX, Vertex, Morandi etc pickup would make a pretty night and day difference to this board or really any you put them in.

Thanks for this review. Am interested in this product. But how is the longevity of the keycaps? I have the OG azio rck compact in gunmetal and the keycaps faded after a few months of use :(

This is crazy awesome mate
Thanks, I’m glad you like it ✌🏻
You are an excellent reviewer. I am most likely going to purchase this keyboard in barebones format. That said, are the new profile keycaps that Keychron includes worth getting? I have a nice set of dye-sub PBT keycaps in Cherry format. Do you personally prefer the new keycap height/format over the standard cherry profile? How do they compare in typing experience. Do they take a while to get used to?
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed the video… funny you ask about the keycaps - I’m just in the process of making my notes comparing the Q1 Max to the Q1 HE and the HE uses the standard OSA keycaps that the V1 (and most other Keychron keyboards) use, so I was just debating this. Personally, I didn’t like the larger KSA keycaps when I first tried them - the sculpting is really aggressive; however, it took about a week of use for me to come around to liking them, and now I kind of prefer them… I would buy the keyboard that you like, then only swap the keycaps if you want to try something different - I think Keychron sells KSA keycaps for like $35 USD or something… I think they are worth trying, but if you do try them, make sure to give them at least 2-weeks before you decide whether you like them or not. They do offer a larger acoustic chamber, so they tend to be louder as well. ✌🏻
Thank you for positng this. It is a simple, yet effective idea. I've just gotten myself a box of 30 tags for US$5 from Aliexpress.
how to disable sleep mode?

I recently received a Rocket Book as part of a set of swag from an event. I was initially skeptical about it, but as I used it, I am really glad that it exists. I've been using that Rocket Book each and every time and I am really pleased. THanks for the links to the alternative means to create the pages. Those make a lot of sense.
Amazing video and design. Super cool to see people in the community offering open source setups such as yours. Thank you so much for sharing and can’t wait to see how this develops in the community!
Thanks! I’m glad you like it 👍🏻 I look forward to seeing where it goes as well 🤞🏻
Which color switch feels the most like a membrane keyboard?
Genuinely curious what the point of a backlight is when the keycaps aren’t shine-through. There are double shot PBT keycaps with shine-through. These keyboards look dumb with the lights on.
Hi Jake, if I were to change the key caps like the enter and backspace, what would you recommend?
Hmmm… I don’t have one specifically picked out, but I would probably look for something like a 9009 colourway (a bit retro) in PBT with an OEM or Cherry profile ✌🏻
@@JakeReevesVideo Gotcha! Thanks Jake!
I'm not into custom keyboards but wow this one sounds so good
It is one of the best relatively “inexpensive” rebuilds I’ve tried from that perspective - very marbly and satisfying 😃
I love reviews like this... no faces, to people, only the keyboard! There are videos in which 99% of the video is just a face speaking, and no keyboard! Yours is the way I want.
Where can we get that theme? The only ones i can find are in grey and black
Currently, the white keycaps I used are out of stock, but worth monitoring: keychron.ca/products/low-profile-double-shot-pbt-keycap-set?variant=40101536170067
Just remember not to use the pen "rubber" as it takes the coat off the pages better to just use the cloth and water
Thank you very much❤
You’re very welcome 👍🏻
Thanks for the video man, still current today in 2024 as it was 4 years ago! Side Note: The pens are important also. I would love a marker style finish, the steel tip ones I use now are fine, but there have been some orders of pens, that are horrible ie. dry out, ink is tooooo light etc -
This is a great video..... thank you.!
Now they cost $320...thanks Biden.
This is the best review I’ve seen of this product. Your conclusion is totally on point and validated my hesitation about buying a cheaper cover. I want a cover to protect my Scribe but, since I’ll rarely be transporting it and the device itself is so large, I want a cover that’s easily removable because the cover will only come into play when I’m not using the device.
Nice video. Do you still have stl files for 3D printed feet for q1 max ?
Thanks - I do, but I haven’t posted them to Printables yet - was working on getting a fully printable V1 Max case posted. DM or email me and I can send you the files
We don’t want edge. We want flow v2.
I’m sure we will get it eventually 🤞🏻
Absolutely gutted that they switched from the old Gateron switches; loved my BBK to bits. Any info as to why they changed the default switch options?
Nothing that I’ve been told about why - there are a lot of things that I can speculate contribute to decisions like this (cost, desire to vertically integrate more, appeal of something “new”, etc.) but usually these are internal decisions. Personally, I really liked the Rose Glacier switches in my first gen Halo. That said, they are still selling many of the switches from the first gen, just not as configurable at the time of purchase - so it could simply be about expanding their switch offerings, marketing these through the default configurations, while also managing how many versions of the keyboards they have to be prepared to build and ship. You can still buy the Baby Kangaroos, you just need to do the swap yourself… which is appealing to many in the hobby.
Would you recommend core or fusion🙂?
Core is more flexible, but requires more effort to develop your own templates - it would be my choice though.
what does the knob do?
Default knob function is volume control (rotation) and mute (press), but you can customize these with QMK/VIA
@@JakeReevesVideo oh ok, thank you😁
The fact they used the Greek L for A makes it 1000 times cringe.
Just got my board with lemon switches. I love the board but I was a bit disappointed by the lemon switches. They sound great and feel super smooth but I guess I've been spoiled by tactiles with strong bumps because the bump on these may as well be nonexistent. It's so light it may as well be linear. Frankly not for me but I could see this being a fun switch for those who enjoy linears but want to try a soft tactile switch.
i don't use ebooks at all but i am looking for a good note taking device, I have been looking at the scribe and the remarkable 2, I am more learning towards the remarkable 2 becaue the writing experience is exceptional, and the software is amazingly good. Is there anything a scribe can do that is a better writing experience than the remarkable be side it being cheaper.
I have only one question about the tool you are using to keep the camera under the screen. Where can I buy it? Thank you.
In terms of noise, which switch has the most/least? I don't want silent, but i dont want overly loud, just in the sort of mid point comparable to Keychron's Red/brown switches
The most comparable to a linear red (safe mid-line) is the raspberry switch ✌🏻
It's nice from nuphy to add Cherry Mx's silent red option.
I love the V Max series but the color combination is.....
I’m working on something for that… stay tuned for my next video ✌🏻
I just got my Halo75 V2 in black with the Raspberry switches. I love the feel, I started with Browns in my first keyboard and then like the Moss on the air series, but the raspberry is a pretty moderate feeling linear. I ordered rose glaciers in case I didn’t like them but the raspberries came on top for me. Good review!
Awesome, thanks for sharing your experience 👍🏻
Are they noisy? I want them to give that satisfactory noise but don’t be to loud
Honestly never comment, but some credit due for a great review just ordered a Mint
Thanks, that means a lot 👍🏻 I hope you enjoy it ✌🏻
Man thank you! What a great review! Sound test 10/10
Thanks, your feedback is very helpful in directing how I make reviews 👍🏻 I’m glad you liked the sound comparisons ✌🏻
I’d rather the gem 80
I’m interested… what specifically draws you to the Gem80 over the Halo75? Aesthetics? Build? Etc.
Are the Aloe switches that Nuphy sells compatible with the Keychron?
Yes, both have a perpendicular pin orientation so the low-profile switches from NuPhy should fit the Keychron (and the same in reverse) ✌🏻
Does the Edge have the thocky feeling as the Flow?
It has the marble-like characteristics, but the thock is not as pronounced because it does have much of a chamber to resonate.
What do you recommend for a macbook? I heard that lofree has problems with MacOs.
I use Macs and haven’t experienced problems with any of these and Macs.
Their screws not bolts but nitpik aside great video, great editing, and great sound test not to mention a thorough review. I'd likely choose the Raspberry switches. I really like a strong bump in my keypresses but it really slows my typing down and gives poor gaming performance so a linear switch is the best option for me as long as it's not too light.
I'm not sure why, but in this video you can't see how eye searingly bright the LEDs for numlock, OS mode and battery indicator are. Love the keyboard otherwise though, especially with the mint switches - I was looking for a wired alternative to MX Keys and I'm very happy with this combination.
I can’t thank you enough for testing all the new switches in one video, for a new customer like me this is a really big factor for me as I’d want to have a good representation of what each switch sounds like!
Thanks for letting me know you liked that 👍🏻 That was the intent behind the video and I hope to be able to continue doing so with future keyboard reviews as well ✌🏻
Is it the same size as the air ? Will it fit their Nufolio ?
No, the Halo series is a standard (high profile) keyboard, so I wouldn’t expect it to fit the NuFolio because that is specifically designed for the low-profile Air series ✌🏻
Hmm I followed your link to the Nuphy site and picked out a keyboard but no discount was applied
Make sure you input the promo code as well 👍🏻 it is listed in the title of the LinkTree
